The Team

Mario Danek


Inventor of the uSonic and the ActivX™ technology suite, Mario holds multiple USPTO utility and design patent applications in the healthcare sector. His interdisciplinary background in entrepreneurship and undergraduate education in the life sciences, have enabled him to bridge the gap in clinical and business applications. He has experience in directing and drafting Utility & Design Patents, 510(k) medical device applications, establishing FDA pre-sub (Q) guidelines, working with US & EU market regulators, international wholesale, licensed rights negotiations, distribution and strategic sales. 

Charles Rosen, MD


Dr. Charles Rosen, is a renowned orthopedic spinal surgeon, Co-founder of the Association for Medical Ethics and Founding Director of the UCI Spine Center. As a well regarded industry watch dog, Dr. Rosen was short-listed for Surgeon General under then President Barack Obama, after he testified before a Senate Special Committee, urging the passage of the Physician Payment Sunshine Act - a bill which would require the disclosure of financial connections between physicians and companies. Presently, Dr. Rosen maintains his position as Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of California, Irvine and is the acting President of the Association for Medical Ethics.

Thay Q Lee, PhD


Dr. Lee is the director of one of the nation's most advanced bio-mechanical research labs in the country and holds the position of: Professor & Vice Chairman for Research & Academic Affairs in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Irvine.  Dr. Lee is also a Senior Research Career Scientist at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System.  Dr. Lee is both nationally and internationally recognized thought leader in joint biomechanics. Dr. Lee published over 200 peer reviewed manuscripts, 400 abstracts, several book chapters and has chaired many conferences in diarthroidal joint biomechanics. He also received many honors and lectures on these topics both nationally and internationally.  Dr. Lee received his BS in Bioengineering and MS in Applied Mechanics at the University of California, San Diego and his PhD in Biomaterials from Gothenburg University in Sweden. 

Steven Ross, MD


Steven Ross, MD has been a leader in his chosen subspecialty, having served in multiple capacities, including as President of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society. Dr. Ross is an active orthopedic researcher and consultant who has recently retired from clinical practice, but his clinical and academic focus have remained in the care and treatment of the foot and ankle. He recently retired from his position of interim chair of the department of Orthopedics at the University of California, Irvine where he was a clinical professor and director of the foot and ankle service.

Dr. Ross has played an active role in developing health care policy in multiple leadership roles at all levels of organized medicine. He has been a leader in the hospital setting as chair of orthopedics, a member of the board of directors of the California Orthopedic Association, a member of the AAOS Board of Councilors, a member and then chair of the AAOS Board of Specialties Society, a member of the AAOS Board of Directors, and a Delegate to the AMA. 

Gemma Cunningham


Gemma Cunningham is the CEO and Founder of TruthMD, whose core product, MedFax™ has garnered nationwide attention. MedFax™ is a highly accurate, up-to-the-minute medical data platform that collects, aggregates and distributes primary source information, including demographic, education/training, practice, licensing, certification, investigation, disciplinary and legal records for every MD and DO in the United States.  The data is transformed into actionable provider intelligence by standardizing, indexing and cross-referencing each piece of information on a daily basis, enabling users to realize powerful insights in real time.

Additionally, Gemma has over 20 years of experience as a marketer in the medical space, with notable clients ranging from specialist surgeons, dentists, primary care providers to prestigious academic medical institutions, like UCLA's Department for Neurosurgery.  

Zack Shepard


Zack Shepard brings a multitude of interdisciplinary skills to Aegis Biomechanics, with a keen focus on realizing brand development through graphic and industrial design and media production. Having gained proficiencies ranging from the Adobe Creative Cloud, general video production, complex equipment management to manufacturing and boatbuilding, Zack has successfully championed the brand identity of his clients. As a lighting director, he has worked with CNN, HBO and MTV. As a media designer, his list of notable clients include the New York Transit Museum and the Sundance Film Festival; and as a cinematographer, he has directed, edited, and produced numerous shorts. 

Peter Lanell, BSME


Peter Lanell is a passionate, strategic and results oriented executive, spanning a consistent track record of success in technology sales for over 2 decades. Peter has been successful in building and leading sales operations from initial product introduction to over $100 million in revenues.  His sales acumen spans products, applications, markets and sales models across a variety of disciplines including Product Life Cycle Management (PLM); Customer Relationship Management (CRM); and Supply Chain Management (SCM). Peter’s executive sales leadership principles have been impactful in early stage companies such as nSuite (acquired by Symantec), Engineering Intent (acquired by Autodesk), Supplybase (acquired by i2 Technologies) and at Concentra (IPO).

John Calderone, PhD


Dr. John Calderone has been the Chief Executive Officer of Olympia Medical Center since 2006 and has over 35 years experience in the healthcare industry. Throughout his career he has been an executive and adjunct professor teaching psychology, gerontology and Healthcare Administration at different universities.  John has been named the recipient of the 4th Annual Healthcare Administrator Award, presented by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) in Washington D.C. for reaching an unprecedented statistic - a hospital infection rate of zero. Today, John sits on the board of directors for the NHF (National Health Foundation).
